Adolescents & Families
Adolescence can be a tumultuous time for families. Adolescence is a natural developmental stage that transitions from childhood to adulthood. This stage comes with many challenges and stressors that may throw a family into a constant state of stress and anxiety. Teens are experiencing hormonal changes and the developmental need to individuate from their parents or caretakers. They too are experiencing a great deal of stress and anxiety as they try to figure out who they are and want to become. Parents and caretakers typically work very hard at guiding their teens in a positive direction but this does not always result in the type of outcome parents or teens desire. I typically use The Family Systems model of therapy where the entire family is looked at as a whole system. Individual family members play a role that contributes to the creation of a family problem. Each of these roles are examined and discussed to see the cause and effect on each other. The family is encouraged to resolve the issue as a whole group.
